Mercurial Scimitar packs a Cleanse into an AD item: the active removes all crowd control and decides fights where ONE stun on you equals death.
Against Skarner, Morgana, Warwick or any composition whose plan is "lock the carry then burst", the active is not measured in stats — it is measured in fights where you stay alive. The magic resist and lifesteal (12% since patch 7.3, only on basic attacks and on-hit damage) round out the defensive role.
An item counter-pick: never buy it by default, buy it against the lockdown that actually kills you.
