Maokai Wild Rift Expert Guide

With Maokai, space out your CC to maintain constant control pressure rather than stacking them unnecessarily. Use your saplings to zone enemy approaches and cut off access routes. In teamfights, your role is to absorb and keep priority targets in place.

Mechanical Tips

  • Twisted Advance (W): Maokai is untargetable whilst dashing — can absorb projectiles in flight. Roots the target on landing.
  • Bramble Smash (Q): Knockback + slow. Use after W to push enemies back or kite them.
  • Sapling Toss (E): Casting in a bush increases duration and expands the explosion radius. Place saplings in bushes before fights to control the area.
  • Nature’s Grasp (R): A wave of roots that advances. Enemies within closer range are rooted more quickly — use this in a lane or against grouped enemies.
  • Sap Magic (passive): Heals after each ability cast or upon taking 5 magic/physical damage. Spam abilities for constant healing in combat.

Common Mistakes

  • Wasting W on non-priority targets — W is your main engage tool; save it for carries.
  • Casting E in open terrain instead of from behind bushes — you’ll lose the damage and duration bonuses.
  • Using R too late (after the engage) — R is more effective as a long-range initiation.

Notable Interactions

  • W can block Blitzcrank’s Q, Lux’s Q, etc. if timed perfectly.
  • R can root multiple enemies in a line — ideal in narrow lanes.
  • Saplings in the bushes act as mobile wards and deal area-of-effect damage.

FAQ

How should I play Maokai in Wild Rift?

Maokai is generally played as Support. The first objective is to control bush vision with e, search for catches on targets without mobility. Its biggest edge comes from reliable point & click (w) engagement and exceptional goal setup (e/r).

When is Maokai strongest?

Maokai takes over in mid game: proactive roam with jungler; turn every pick into a goal.

How do I punish Maokai?

Maokai can be punished when strongly countered by anti-control (morgana, olaf) and massive peeling. A practical answer listed here is: Punish immobile ADCs as soon as they lay a ward without cover.
