Alistar Guide

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Easy-to-use support with high team value.
  • W→Q gives enormous initiation and pick potential at all stages.
  • His ultimate dive will protect his carry for a long time to come.

Weaknesses

  • Limited range: poor positioning is costly.
  • Outside of the main combo, the kit offers less utility than some other supports.
  • Without Flash, engage angles become predictable.

Quick read

Core identity

Alistar is mainly played as Support. Its clearest strength is easy-to-use support with high team value..

First priority in lane

The early plan is to stabilize lane, protect tempo and reach the first clean spike.

Main punishment pattern

Alistar becomes easier to punish when limited range: poor positioning is costly..

Gameplay notes

Micro decisions

  • Decide early whether your W is for engage or for peeling a threat. Wasting it on an average trade often removes all lane pressure.
  • Do not always reveal your combo angle by walking straight forward. A small detour through brush or fog changes enemy reactions completely.
  • During ultimate, choose a target and a zone. Tanking everywhere at once looks active but does not actually lock anything down.
  • In mid game, sometimes hold Flash for the objective fight rather than a secondary pick. Alistar gains a lot when his entry is unexpected.

Common mistakes

  • Engaging the moment the combo is available without checking actual allied follow-up range.
  • Using Headbutt to go forward when it will be needed seconds later to peel a threat off the carry.
  • Activating ultimate too late after already taking a large portion of incoming burst.
  • Chasing a flashy combo onto the backline instead of neutralizing the enemy’s real engage path.
  • Staying too visible before an objective, making his engage angle trivial to read.

Level 2 all-in

His first real threat spike comes as soon as his full combo is available in lane. At that point, Alistar does not just gain an engage tool: he also forces opponents to respect a more punishing spacing rule, which changes how they play the wave and ward.

Level 5 dive window

Once ultimate is unlocked, Alistar can absorb enemy response for much longer. That opens dives, pressure re-engages, and aggressive space-taking around dragon, as long as his team genuinely follows the first entry.

Boot enchant and mid-game objectives

With completed boots and the right enchant, Alistar becomes far more threatening in prepared fights. This is often where his value rises the most: not through damage, but through his ability to force a fast angle before the enemy properly sets its formation.

Game Plan

How to Play

Playing Against

Combos

Double target - Knock up chain Hard
W W (project A to B) Q Q at contact AA AA

Throws the first target into the second, then Q to lift both. Ideal when sticking to minions.

Insec (bring back a target) Hard
Q Q (bump) walk/Flash behind W W towards your team

Bump to freeze the target, place yourself on its back and send it back to your team. Save Flash for highly mobile targets.

Long CC chain Hard
E E (pre-activated) W W Q Q AA AA (stun E)

Prepare E before entry; W→Q charges your stacks and the empowered auto locks the target.

Long-range engagement Hard
Hexflash/Flash W W Q Q E E AA AA (stun)

Buffer the entrance to surprise; E's auto seals the focus on the priority target.

Wall knock up Medium
W W in a wall (tempo) Q Q AA AA

Throwing into a wall slows the target; wedge Q just after impact.

Q-Flash surprise Medium
Q Q Instant flash on target

Start Q then Flash at the last moment to hit several enemies beyond your normal range.

All-in standard Easy
W W Q Q E E AA AA

Classic: launch E after the bump to load and paste the stun.

Basic knock-up (anti all-in) Easy
Q Q (reactive) W W (eject)

On defense, Q cuts off the entrance and W removes the threat from your backline.
