Expert note

Expert take

Rakan is a champion who rewards timing and reading the moment more than raw mechanics. His kit looks flashy, but the real difficulty is knowing when not to press the button. A good Rakan understands whether his team needs engage, counter-engage, or simple pressure around vision. He must track enemy spells, feel his allies’ distance, and decide whether Protobelt is needed to reach the backline or Gargoyle is needed to survive the response. He is an excellent choice for players who like dictating tempo without being locked into a static tank role. But he becomes much less reliable if you play every fight as if you are forced to go in first.

Weak point

Hidden weakness

Rakan’s hidden weakness is not only his fragility: it is his dependence on fight geometry. If allies are too far to give him an exit with Battle Dance, if walls and brushes do not create an angle, or if the enemy forces him to engage in a straight line, his kit loses a large part of its threat. Many players only notice the missed R→W, but the real problem often happened three seconds earlier: bad starting position, missing vision, or E used too early.

§ 02 — Strengths & weaknesses Rakan Wild Rift strengths and weaknesses

↑ Strengths
  • He punishes teams that group around objectives without controlling flanks: one R→Flash→W can turn a missing ward into a lost dragon or Baron.
  • He gives real initiative to a bot lane or team lacking a reliable starting button, especially when the jungler can quickly convert his crowd control.
  • His key items support his exact rhythm: Zeke's Convergence rewards clean entries, Protector's Vow protects the carry, and enchants adjust either his access or survivability.
  • He remains useful even when he cannot directly engage, because Battle Dance lets him play peel, repositioning, and counter-initiation around his carry.
↓ Weaknesses
  • Avoid Rakan if the enemy team already has several reliable disengage tools that are easy to hold for you, because your entry becomes predictable and hard to convert.
  • Avoid him if your composition cannot move forward after your first crowd control: Rakan engages fast, but he does not finish a fight alone without immediate follow-up.
  • Avoid him if your carry needs a very stable support from the first waves and you will not have priority to play around brushes.
  • Avoid him when you know you will have to play only front-to-back with no flank or fog of war, because his best engages rarely come from a visible straight line.

§ 05 — Recommended buildBest Rakan Wild Rift build for the current patch

Rakan remains a very relevant support when solo queue rewards fast initiative, mid-game rotations, and fights decided by one clean crowd-control window. His real strength does not come only from engaging, but from his ability to enter, charm multiple targets with The Quickness, land Grand Entrance from the right angle, then escape through Battle Dance instead of staying trapped inside the fight. In this patch, he works best when his team can instantly follow his first contact: a carry ready to step forward, a jungler playing around vision, or a composition able to convert his R→W into a kill or objective. However, Rakan loses a lot of value if the game becomes too frontal, if his Flash is repeatedly forced defensively, or if the enemy team saves disengage tools specifically to break his entry.

Orianna
Ideal
Orianna
Rakan is an elite ball carrier for Orianna because his speed into the backline makes Shockwaves much harder to anticipate. The duo almost executes itself: Orianna shields Rakan, Rakan engages with The Quickness then Grand Entrance, and Shockwave explodes as multiple targets are already charmed or knocked up. This combination destroys grouped teams and becomes one of the best full-commit engage threats in teamfights.
Rumble
Ideal
Rumble
Rakan forces panic movement that is perfect for The Equalizer because targets must choose between staying grouped inside his crowd control or crossing Rumble's damage zone. The best sequence is to let Rakan engage first to freeze the lines, then place Rumble's ultimate over the natural exits of the fight to turn a clean engage into repositioning hell. The duo excels around objectives and in narrow corridors where it controls both entry and escape.
Riven
Strong
Riven
Riven loves broken formations, and Rakan is excellent at shattering them quickly with a multi-target engage that opens clean dash angles. After Rakan's initial control, Riven can enter without wasting too much mobility just to close distance, leaving more resources to finish the kill or exit. The synergy is very strong in mid game when fights are fast and the duo can strike before proper front-to-back setup appears.
Rengar
Strong
Rengar
Rakan can create the exact chaos Rengar needs to choose his real target without jumping into an intact and well-protected setup. Depending on the fight, Rakan either engages first to scatter peelers, or holds his engage to follow Rengar's leap and deny the counter-response around the focused carry. That flexibility makes the duo very threatening into teams that rely on a single protector for their backline.

§ 08 — DialoguesRakan Wild Rift FAQ

Q.01 Is Rakan a good blind pick support? +

Rakan can be blind picked if your team is willing to play around tempo, vision, and follow-up, but he is not reliable in every draft. The danger comes from answers that are easy to hold against him: disengage, anti-control shields, instant crowd control, or lanes able to punish him when Grand Entrance misses. If you blind pick him, play less like an automatic engage bot and more like a flexible support: flank pressure, peel with E, and re-engage after an important enemy cooldown is spent.

Q.02 Should Rakan always engage in teamfights? +

No. That is actually one of the biggest mistakes on Rakan. If the enemy is holding crowd control for you or if your carry is threatened by a dive, your best role may be to protect, absorb the enemy entry, then re-engage once they have stepped too far forward. Rakan is strong because he can change function during a fight: engage, exit, return, peel, then restart. The correct choice depends less on your combo being available and more on your allies’ position and the enemy answers still available.

Q.03 What is Rakan’s biggest power spike? +

Level 5 is the spike that changes his threat the most, because The Quickness turns a simple Grand Entrance into a real fight condition. But his most exploitable ranked spike often comes with Zeke's Convergence and the right enchant. At that point, Rakan can not only find the opening, but also make the entry valuable for his carry. The important decision is not to wait passively: use that timing to establish vision, roam mid, or force an objective while your combo must be respected.

Q.04 Why do my Rakan engages often fail? +

Most failed engages do not come from Grand Entrance itself, but from the setup. If you engage without a flank, without vision, without an ally in Battle Dance range, or without knowing which enemy spell can stop you, your combo becomes easy to read. Before going in, ask yourself: who follows my engage, who can save me, and which enemy spell breaks my play? If you do not have those three answers, it is often better to threaten the engage, wait for a cooldown, or play peel until a better window appears.
